认为艺术起源与情感表现和交流的需要。代表人物：雪莱、列夫托尔斯泰、维隆、乔治科林伍德、苏珊朗格。合理之处：表现说无疑是关于艺术起源问题的最重要的理论之一。情感在推动艺术的发生和发展上有着不可忽视的动力作用，它从本质的角度体现出艺术一个方面的基本特征，因此，今天仍然有许多学者坚持从情感表现的意义上来分析和认识艺术。不足指出：首先，仅仅局限于“表现说”，很难将再现性艺术、创造性艺术的起源解释得十分清楚。其次，人类表现情感的方式是多样的，艺术之外的许多语言动作和表情都可以表现情感，仅仅强调感情的冲动和宣泄还不能完全说明艺术产生的真谛。
