学名 Lepus yarkandensis ,英文名 Yarkand hare,兔科 Leporidae。分布在新疆南部塔里木盆地,为国家二级保护动物。
塔里木兔的耳朵特别大,体形较小,体长35~43厘米,尾长5~10厘米,体重不到2千克。由于长期适应干旱自然环境,其形态高度特化;毛色浅淡,背部沙黄褐色,尾部无黑毛,整体毛色与栖息环境非常接近;听觉器官非常发达,耳长达10厘米,超过其他兔类。利用长耳壳可接收到较远距离的微弱音响,及时发现并逃脱天敌。
栖息于盆地中各种不同的荒漠环境和绿洲,白天活动,晚间常在灌木丛下挖浅窟藏身。以灌木的树皮和细枝为食,也取食芦苇嫩茎。每年于5月和8月份繁殖两次,每窝产仔2~5只。
塔里木兔为新疆南部平原区的主要狩猎动物,以农区对农作物有一定危害,近几年数量明显减少。
