植物的光合作用有两个反应过程，光反应和暗反应，光反应需要光才能进行，而暗反应不需要光，在黑暗处也可以进行。
光合作用的光反应是放出氧气的反应。先通过光能，将水分解成氢气和氧气，氧气释放出来，同时将光能转化为化学能，帮助二磷酸腺苷（adp）合成三磷酸腺苷（atp），光能转化成的化学能储存在atp中。氢气和atp供暗反应使用。
光合作用的暗反应是合成有机物供植物利用的反应。植物从空气中吸收的二氧化碳，化学性质不活泼，不能直接被氢气还原，需要先进行二氧化碳的固定，一个二氧化碳分子和一个五碳化合物分子形成两个三碳化合物分子，三碳化合物分子通过atp和多种酶的作用，被氢还原，经过一系列复杂的变化，形成葡萄糖，这样，atp中的能量就释放出来，储存在葡萄糖中。这就是光合作用的全过程，简言之，就是通过光能使得无机物合成有机物，并把能量储存在有机物中。
