雪兔别名白兔、变色兔，属于兔科。雪兔躯体略大于草兔。体长45～62厘米，长短于后足长，尾长短于耳长。毛色冬夏差异很大。冬毛长而密，体侧与腹部毛最长，通体白色，仅耳尖和眼周黑褐色。夏毛较短，背部黄褐色，额部黄褐色比背部更显著，眼周白色圈狭窄，腹部白色。
雪兔栖息于寒温带针叶林和苔原地区。行动机警，听觉和嗅觉发达。白天隐藏于洞穴中，夜间出来觅食。一般活动范围比较固定，雌雄免成对活动。降雪时，常做成深达1米以上的洞穴，雪地上形成纵横交错的跑道。食物包括各种草类、树叶、嫩枝及树皮等。每年产仔2～3窝，孕期约50天，每胎一般3～5仔。初生的幼兔能睁眼，可以活动，全身被毛。冬毛柔软、绒厚且质量好，可以人工驯养利用。产于黑龙江、内蒙古及新疆北部。
