在固原县城东北45公里处，有一座绿草如茵的山峰，那就是云雾山。云雾山主峰海拔2128米，山基由白云岩、红色砂砾组成，土壤为地灰褐土和淡黑垆土，生长草甸植被。1982年，固原县在云雾山建立了面积达4000公顷的草原自然保护区，1995年被列为省（区）级自然保护区，这也是我国黄土高原建立的第一个草地类自然保护区。保护区内有植物51科131属182种，动物40科74属80种，益虫14科28种，蜘蛛5科7种。保护区所保护的对象就是这些草原植被及其生态系统，包括气候、土壤、昆虫、野生动植物、微生物等。
