This thesis researches the literary transformable elements in the text of Six Chapters of a Floating Life, seeks the material approach and course with which the traditional literature achieve the creationary transformations, then we backdate the historical conditions which the text existed, to look for the societal cause of the transformations.

The Gothic literary elements and the unreliable narration of horror in The Fall of the House of Usher play a part in Poe’s endeavor to usher the reader into a collapsing spiritual world of human beings that ultimately succumbed to the power of material world.
