Together with the Commentaries of Sanguozhi by Songzhi Pei, of Shuijing by Daoyuan Li, of Wenxuan by Shan Li, the commentary of Shishuoxinyu by Xiaobiao Liu, are highly praised as the samples of commentary.
刘孝标《<世说新语>注》历享盛誉，与裴松之《<三国志>注》、郦道元《<水经>注》、李善《<文选>注》一起被推为注家之楷模。

刘孝仪
(484～550)
南朝梁代文学家。名潜，以字行。刘孝绰弟。初为始兴王萧
法曹行参军,随同出镇益州,兼记室。后又随晋安王萧纲出镇襄阳。曾出使北魏。累迁尚书左丞，兼御史中丞。历任临海太守、豫章内史。后来侯景叛乱，州郡失陷。大宝元年(550)病逝。刘孝绰品评诸弟有“三笔六诗”之说，“三”即三弟孝仪;“六”为刘孝威
《梁书·刘孝仪传》称孝仪曾奉
制《雍州平等寺金像碑》（《艺文类聚》题作《雍州金像寺无量寿佛像碑》），文甚弘丽。如“日轮照耀，月面从容，毫散珠辉，唇开异色。似含微笑，俱注目于瞻仰；如出软言,咸倾耳于谛听”,这样的描写，生动而不失庄严。《艺文类聚》又录有《平等寺刹下铭》，写得也典重富丽，当是同时之作。《北使还与永丰侯书》，写行役时的苦辛和回南后的欣喜，都生动而有情致。《隋书·经籍志》有《刘孝仪集》20卷,今佚
《先秦汉魏晋南北朝诗》录存其诗12首。《全上古三代秦汉三国六朝文》录存刘孝仪并弟孝威文为 1卷。明张溥辑有《刘孝仪孝威集》，收在《汉魏六朝百三家集》中。沈玉成
