保亭黎族苗族自治县位于海南岛南部，五指山的南麓，东到东北与陵水县相连，北部尖顶接着琼中县，西北与通什市接壤，西部顶尖接乐东县，西南到东南与三亚交界。县境东西宽49公里，南北长54公里，面积1160.6平方公里，人口155583人，黎族占54.13，苗族占3.36。
森林资源丰富，多为热带雨林，具有多层、常绿、混交和多树种的特点。珍贵木材有母生、子京、坡垒、花梨、绿楠、红罗、加卜等。药用植物有沉香、降香、罗芙木、大血藤、黄连藤、砂仁等148个品种。野生珍贵动物资源有原鸡、鹧鸪、白鹤、孔雀雉、野猪、水獭、马鹿等。矿藏资源主要有金、铁、铜、铅、锌、石灰石、大理石、水晶、矿泉水。
