宿鸭湖水库位于汝南县城西6公里处,始建于1958年,是目前是亚洲面积最大平原人工水库,有“人造洞庭”之美誉。水库东岸南北土坝全长35公里,湖水面最宽处15公里,控制流域面积4715平方公里,库区面积239平方公里,库区占地35万亩,库容8.2亿立方米。湖西岸有6万亩森林植被和万亩芦苇荡,环湖坝堤上有数万棵绿杨翠柳,不是江南胜似江南,目前已申报为省级湿地自然保护区。1989重建！宿鸭湖及其湿地,显得非常热闹:3000多只白鹭在翱翔,数百只大天鹅、小天鹅在嬉戏。据统计,目前,常年有数万只鸟在汝南筑巢。全县已发现候鸟、留鸟130多种,其中有国家一级保护动物丹顶鹤、白鹳、朱鹳3种,被列入《濒危野生动物、植物种国际贸易公约》的鸟类11种。
