两侧视神经交叉的地方，位于颅中凹蝶鞍的前上方。来自两眼视网膜内(鼻）侧半部的纤维交叉，而来自两眼视网膜外(颞）侧半部的纤维不交叉。因此，视交叉后面的视束中，含有来自两眼视网膜同向半部的纤维，例如右侧视束由两眼视网膜右侧半部(右眼颞侧和左眼鼻侧）的纤维所组成。
