热带植物园位于动腊县勐仑罗梭江畔的葫芦岛，距景洪市96公里。它是由中国著名的植物学家蔡希陶创办的云南热带植物研究所的所在地。该园占地1.5万亩，海拔570米。经过40多年的努力，现已建成以热带植物开发利用为中心，进行国内外热带植物引种驯化、保护和推广的重要基地。现已栽培了3000种国内外的热带植物，建立了12个专类区，其中有1700种是本地热带植物，并且取得了许多重要的科研成果。它是世界上为数不多的、荟萃中外热带、亚热带植物的宝库，也是一个大花园式的游览胜地。
走进园内，可以看到天然 图画一样的热带雨林。有从古巴引种的蛋黄果树，这种树结的果形如鸡蛋或鸭蛋，色如蛋黄，味如鸡蛋，故名。有会闻乐起舞的风流草，会吃小昆虫的猪笼草，吃了能使酸变甜的神秘果。另外还有治疗癌症的美登木，具有活血化瘀功能的龙血树，有见血封喉的箭毒木；有从国外引进的橡胶、腰果、咖啡、可可；有油料植物油瓜、椰子；有香料植物胡椒、依兰香，还有染料植物等。各种奇花异草千姿百态，各种热带瓜果挂满枝头，真是热带植物的大荟萃、大展览！人们不仅可以得到美的享受，大开眼界，还能增长许多植物方面的知识。
