气体星云、某些活动星系和某些恒星的光谱中常出现氢的巴耳末发射线。一般来说,巴耳末发射线中Hα 最强，Hβ 次之......越往后强度越小。以Hβ 线强度为单位的各条巴耳末发射线的强度称为巴耳末减幅。巴耳末发射线的强度与天体的物理性质如密度、温度、宏观运动状况等有关。因此，巴耳末减幅为研究天体的物理性质提供了重要线索。下表列出气体星云的巴耳末减幅值。表的最后一栏是一个典型的气体星云的巴耳末减幅的观测值；第二、三、四栏是理论值。计算时假定星云对辅线系辐射完全透明，并忽略碰撞激发和碰撞电离。巴耳末减幅的理论值对电子温度很不敏感，理论值同观测值相当一致。
