由于各个地理要素的相互作用，对于地理系统的演化而言，具备一种“自发地”保持某种状态或水平的趋势，在此趋势引导下，原先非稳定的地理系统会逐渐趋于稳定；原先已处于稳定态的地理系统，当发生扰动时具有恢复自身的能力；当扰动过大，破坏了原先的稳定态，且地理系统无法回复原状时，它又会趋于新的稳定态。以上所有状况，都说明了地理趋稳性的特征。地理系统的自组织能力、自我调节与自我适应的能力、自我修补的能力等，是维持地理趋稳性的内在原因；各种输入函数相对狭窄的阈值范围和相对稳定的变率特征，是维持地理趋稳性的外在原因。从整体上去看，它们完整地体现了地理趋稳的原则。
