日本理化学研究所的研究小组通过对热带鱼的实验，弄清了为什么脑的左右结构会出现差异。两种神经细胞诞生的时机不同，导致左右出现差异，形成了左右非对称的结构。
人很可能有同样的脑神经细胞形成机制。据说这个研究成果可成为弄清脑机能进化过程的线索。
动物的左右脑结构不同。人的左右脑的内部结构也不同，据认为左脑控制“语言、逻辑”，右脑控制“感情、空间认识”，左右脑结构的不同导致机能存在差异。但是此前没有弄清楚左右脑为什么会出现非对称结构。
研究小组用小型热带鱼做实验，观察了脑的“缰核”部分的发育过程。左右脑中都有“缰核”，但结构不同。经详细调查，最后了解到，两侧形成“缰核”的神经细胞的生成时期是不同的，由此导致了“缰核”结构出现差别。
