arctic zone
包括巴伦支海的大部分水面以外的北冰洋，以及北美东部纽芬兰到冰岛一线西北的大西洋部分。这里表层水温低，又因大陆冰冻期长，江河流入海洋的营养盐类不多，故海洋生物种数有限，仅在冰融化的边缘海域，才有浮游生物，并将一些鱼类和其它动物吸引到此处。其中具有经济价值的鱼类主要有北极鳕、白海鲱等；此外，还有鲸目动物（北极鲸或格陵兰鲸）以及海豹、海象和海鸥、海雀、海鹦等。
北极圈（arctic circle）
即北纬66°34′纬线圈。
这是北半球上发生极昼、极夜现象最南的界线。北极圈以北的区域，阳光斜射，正午太阳度角很小，并有一段时间是漫长的黑夜（极夜），因而获得太阳热量很少，为北寒带。北极圈是北温带和北寒带的分界线。
