婴儿腹泻的主要致病菌，严重者可致死。本组细菌不产生肠毒素，它们主要寄生在十二指肠、空肠和回肠上端。其致病机制不清，但已发现某些血清型大肠杆菌是致病性大肠杆菌，本组细菌常对多种抗菌素具有耐药性。该组疾病的诊断主要依靠临床症状及细菌血清学鉴定。
