全长约60厘米。雄鸟体羽及两翅主要为深栗红色，满布具黑缘的灰色眼状斑，下体斑大而色浅。头部、颈环及喉下肉裙周缘为黑色；面、颏的裸出部及头上肉角均为蓝色；后头羽冠橙红色。喙角褐色。脚粉红，有距。雌鸟上体灰褐色，下体淡黄色，杂以黑、棕、白斑。尾羽栗褐色，有黑色和淡棕色横斑。脚无距。
栖息于海拔1600-3000米之间的冷杉、赤桦等林中，隐匿于稠密的杜鹃、箭竹丛间或密被苔藓的树上。主要食物种子、果实、幼芽、嫩叶等。多单独活动。繁殖期在4-6月间。多筑巢于华山松主干侧枝叉处，由松萝、干枝、藤条、枯叶等构成。每窝产卵3-10枚，土黄色，密布以黄褐色斑点。孵卵期26-30天。
