起源于北美洲格陵兰岛上爱斯基摩人用动物皮包在木架子上制作的兽皮船。1865年苏格兰的麦克格雷戈（john macgregor）仿兽皮船制作了1条长4米、宽75厘米、重30公斤的“诺布·诺依”号皮艇，驾艇穿越了瑞典、芬兰、德国、英国。19世纪90年代在欧洲得到广泛开展。皮艇有舵，比赛时，运动员坐在艇内，面向前方，手持两头带桨叶的桨在艇的两侧轮流划动，依靠脚操纵舵控制航向。有单人艇、双人艇、四人艇和障碍回转项目。
①单人艇 艇长520厘米，宽51厘米重12公斤。奥运会比赛项目有男子500米（1976年列入）、1000米（1936年列入），女子500米（1948年列入）。
②双人艇 艇长650厘米，宽55厘米，重18公斤。奥运会比赛项目有男子500米（1976年列入）、1000米（1936年列入），女子500米（1960年列入）。
③四人艇 艇长1100厘米，宽60厘米，重30公斤。奥运会比赛项目有男子1000米（1964年列入），女子500米（1984年列入）、1000米（1992年列入）。
④障碍回转 运动员必须在规定的航道内于激流中穿越或绕过规定的障碍到达终点，以扣分少者为胜。航道长800米，有人工障碍和天然障碍。人工障碍是宽为90—120厘米的门框，一般设25—30个，比赛时必须穿越每个门框，碰撞或漏穿均要扣分。男、女单人障碍回转均于1992年被列为奥运会比赛项目。
