In her second long novel Sula,Toni Morrison challenges the traditional concept by breaking the black people′s literature tradition of "respect men but despise women"and creates three different American black women-Eve,Sula and Nel by displaying their indomitable spirit of fighting against the oppression of race,sex and class.

And the choice of "purple "as its title,conceives a purple centered symbolic color system,which does drop a hint that only by resolute struggle can black women live an ideal happy life.
