日本小说家、 儿童文学家。 生于冈山县御津郡。1915年早稻田大学英文系毕业。曾在早稻田大学图书馆任职，并担任杂志的编辑和翻译工作。
坪田早期的作品大多是短篇小说，富有田园牧歌色彩。代表作《正太的马》(1920)、《河童的故事》(1927)等，描写儿童们天真烂漫和纯洁无瑕的心灵。他的三部曲《妖怪的世界》(1935)、《风中的孩子》（1936）和《四季的孩子》(1938)发表后，引起文坛瞩目。1961年被任命为日本艺术院会员，并任日本儿童文学家协会会长。
