由人或动物的受精卵发育而成的早期发育的个体。卵生动物为孵出之前的个体。在人,指怀孕最初两个月的幼体。胚胎发育是从受精卵开始的,受精卵不断进行分裂,产生许许多多的细胞,这些细胞再进而形成各种组织、器官、系统。人的胚胎发育大约达8个星期末,外貌有点像人,从这时起到出生,不再称胚胎,而叫胎儿,人和绝大多数哺乳动物的胚胎在母体子宫内发育成长,并借脐带与胎盘连接,通过胎盘从母体获得营养。胚胎在发育中极易受放射线、病毒和某些药物等的伤害,而产生生理缺陷、形态畸形及功能障碍。如在妊娠等2~3个月服用四环素,可能使婴儿乳齿呈黄色或棕色,骨生长畸变;妊娠早期感染风疹病毒,可能使婴儿患耳聋、先天性心脏病等。因此,孕妇在此期间要预防感冒、风疹等病毒感染的疾病,避免X线照射,慎重用药。
