【来源】
为毛茛科植物新疆芍药 paeonia sinjiangensis K.Y.Pan 的根。
【植物形态】
多年生宿根草本，全体无毛。根圆柱形，多分枝。茎高40～80cm。2回三出复叶，叶片轮廓阔卵形；小叶羽状分裂，裂片狭披针形，全缘；叶柄长1～5cm。花红色单生茎顶；萼片5，卵形，苞片3～5，披针形；心皮2～4（～5）；骨突果卵状，种子黑色。花期6～7月，果期7～8月。 生于山坡林下。主产新疆。
【采制】
春、秋挖根，去净残质后晒干。
【性状】
根呈圆柱形，稍扭曲，直径0.5～4cm。表面灰褐色，皱缩，可见须根痕及横向突起的皮孔；有时可见栓皮脱落形成的片状斑痕。质硬而脆，断面黄白色、淡紫色；皮部窄，有时与木部分离，木部放射状纹理明显，有时木部的放射状纹理间有裂隙。气香、昧微甜、涩。
【化学成分】
含芍药甙（paeoniflorin），另含少量的羟基芍药甙（oxypaeoniflorin）、芍药内酯甙（aibiriorin）及苯甲酸。 本品在新疆作赤芍用。
【附注】
赤芍主为芍药 P.lactifloraPall．的根。性微寒，味苦；功能清热凉血，散瘀止痛；用于吐血衄血、经闭腹痛及冠心病心绞痛。
