亮度有时突然减弱约1～9个星等的不规则变星。典型星是北冕座R,已确定的和可能的对象约40颗。它们的光变持续时间由几十天到几百天不等，上升缓慢而且间有不规则的或锯齿波式的起伏。两次减光的间隔有的很短，有的则长达十年以上。在这期间还存在为期数十天、变幅半个星等左右的半规则光变。一般认为变光是由恒星自身抛出的含碳特多的气壳冷凝成烟尘使透明度急剧下降造成的。近年来观测到它们有很大的红外色余，更支持了这种看法。因此有人认为，过去因为变光急剧而把它们归属于爆发变星是不恰当的。但也有人认为，如果这种变星是由于爆发性地喷射物质造成挡光而变暗，则仍可归入爆发变星，不过它们与急剧变亮的爆发变星是很不相同的。
北冕座R型变星大多数的光谱型为F～K和R，但也有少量的是O型或B型（见恒星光谱分类）；极大亮度时的绝对星等还很难确定，但似乎是-4～-5等的巨星或超巨星；空间分布属星族I；正常时期的光谱为具有H、K、D及氦3,889等发射线的宽发射线光谱;没有巴耳末发射线和CH的吸收带或发射带，得知其大气中明显缺氢；变暗时也出现各种轻金属和氰化合物的发射线，说明其大气中含有丰富的碳、氦和轻金属。
