由高速运行的自由电子群，撞击在阳极靶被突然阻止而产生的一种极短电磁波。它由著名物理学家威·康·伦琴(W·C·Roentgen）于1895年发现，又称伦琴射线。当时对这种射线的性质不十分明了，故以数学上的未知数“X”来命名。X线具有以下作用：①穿透性；②荧光作用，这是用于荧光透视的基础；③摄影作用，亦称感光作用，这是X线摄影的基础；④电离作用和生物效应，这是实行放射防护和放射治疗的基本原理。
