This paper is intended to apply the referential theory in the philosophy of language,together with the three meta functions framework in the Systemic Functional Linguistic Theory to the analysis of the change in meaning of the referring expressions in Trevor\'s "The Dressmaker\'s Child" in order to explore the implied theme of the short novel.
