禾本科雀麦属的一个种，学名Bromus cartharticus Vahl.，短期多年生草本植物。原产阿根廷，中国云贵高原也有野生类型。现在的栽培种是从美国、新西兰、阿根廷等国引进的。云南省有少量栽培。
须根发达；茎粗大扁平，株高80-110cm；叶长20-30cm，稍有柔毛；圆锥花序，分枝，顶端着生2-5小穗，小穗含6-12朵小花，种子多，千粒重10g左右。
喜温暖湿润气候，不耐寒，也不耐高温，耐盐碱能力较强，耐旱、不耐涝。适于温暖又无严冬酷暑的地区生长，在云贵高原，能在冬季生长。喜沃的粘质土壤。北方春播，夏季即可收到种子，收种后仍可再生。
南方冬季温暖地区宜秋播，北方宜春播当年利用。一年可收三四茬，每公顷产干草7500kg左右。种子产量可达1500-2200/kg/ha。需肥量高，宜施有机肥和追施化肥。
适口性好，可以青饲，也可以晒制干草，其鲜草含干物质30%，粗蛋白4.7%，粗脂肪1.0%，粗纤维7.3%，无氮浸出物12.6%，灰分4.4%。
