农民(peasant)主要从事农业生产或完全依靠农业为生的劳动者。 在不同的历史阶段，农民的社会经济地位不同。在奴隶社会，有自耕农和隶农之分。自耕农是以小块土地所有制为基础，从事个体农业生产活动的自由农民。隶农是耕种大土地所有者划分给他们的小块份地的佃耕者，是一种介于自由农民和奴隶之间的农业劳动者，恩格斯称他们是“中世纪农奴的前辈”。在封建社会，除自耕农外，在欧洲大量存在着的是农奴。他们用自己的工具和耕畜为农奴主耕种土地，同时还耕种着农奴主分给他们的一小块份地。他们对农奴主存在着人身依附关系。在中国则大量存在着租种地主土地的佃农和受雇于地主、富农的雇农。在封建社会，农民是主要的劳动者，也是同封建地主阶级相对抗的基本阶级。在封建制度下，农民遭受着残酷的经济剥削和政治压迫，因此不断地进行反抗，发动起义。从封建社会末期到资本主义社会，农民阶级在商品经济和市场竞争的影响下发生了剧烈的分化，大部分农民破产变成了雇农和贫农，少数农民因生产条件比较好变成了富农，其余的是中农。在西欧各国通常称这些农民阶层为小农、中农和大农。在资本主义社会和半封建半殖民地社会中，雇农是农村中的无产阶级，贫农是农村中的半无产阶级，中农是农村中的小资产阶级，富农(大农)是农村中的资产阶级。在旧中国及类似的半封建、半殖民地社会中，因为资本主义经济不发达，农村中富农的数量不多，经济力量薄弱，其中的大多数出租部分土地兼放高利贷，对雇农的剥削也很残酷，因此带有明显的封建性。在半封建半殖民地的旧中国，农民占全国人口的绝大多数，深受帝国主义、封建主义和官僚资本主义的剥削和压迫。广大劳动农民为着切身利益，反抗帝国主义的侵略和封建地主阶级和官僚资产阶级的残酷剥削与压迫，曾多次进行武装起义和各种各样的斗争。事实教育了广大农民，只有与工人阶级结成同盟，在无产阶级及其政党—中国共产党的领导一下，才有出路。中国共产党在领导全国广大劳动人民进行反帝、反封建、反官僚资本主义的长期斗争中，始终把争取和团结厂一大农民，建亿巩固的仁农联盟，视为革命事业成败的重大问题，并且在各个不同时期制定了正确对待农民的政策。依靠贫雇农，团结中农，中立富农，消灭封建地主阶级，是新民主主义革命时期的农村阶级路线;依靠贫农和下中农，团结中农，限制和改造富农，是社会主义革命时期对农业实行社会主义改造的阶级路线。在社会主义社会，农民是社会主义建设的一支重要力量。在中国，农村人口占总人口的80%左右，重视发挥农民的社会上义建设积极性，同时在物质文明和精神文明建设中，帮助农民提高文化科学水平，克服历史上所遗留下来的比较保守和狭隘等思想影响，极为爪要 (张平)
