本文运用考古资料与历史文献相结合的研究方法,对辽代兴建的上京和中京两个都城进行了较为详细的论述,得出了以下主要观点:第一,辽上京的规划是其民族文化传统的体现,具有坐西朝东的特征;第二,辽中京的整体布局主要效仿了北宋都城汴京,但仍体现了民族政权都城的一定特点;第三,辽上京南北两城的建筑形制,其根本原因应是出于契丹贵族对异民族防范的需要;第四,辽中京宫城外三面环绕的皇城,可能是辽上京西山坡宫城西墙借用皇城西墙的做法的延续。
