大坪，危耸于黑白二水之间，一峰突起。位于峨眉山的中部，左与华严顶、长老坪、息心所、观心坡诸山，比肩相望；右有天池、宝掌、玉女、呼应诸峰，四绕回环；牛心顶鼎峙于前；九老洞屏临于后，海拔1450米。 山势险峻，孤峰脊岭，仅东北两侧各有一陡坡上下，东面蛇倒退险，北面猴子坡高，悬崖绝壁，行者如走在刀背之上，罕见人迹。峰顶平坦，林木蓊郁，云霞幻变。相传大坪有五奇：“猴回娘家”、“蛇不咬人”、“黑虎巡更”、“乌鸦请客”、“仙姑弹琴”（弹琴蛙）。而自然风光还有一奇，即“大坪霁雪”，为峨眉山十景之胜。 每年秋未，金顶开始飘雪；立冬一过，大坪已是雪花 满山飞舞，纷纷扬扬，一株株挺立的常绿乔木，如琼枝玉叶，白塔凌空。严冬时，峨眉山处 处雪树冰花，全山宛似银色世界。明代四川嘉定诗人蔡祯的《三峨雪霁》云：“三峨天下壮，秀色接青?。绝?千秋雪，危峰百仞银。日临观宝气，云敛见仙人，中有蓬莱客，丹砂远俗尘。”吴祖光在《雾里峨眉》一文中评说：“雪景最大特点是白雪压在绿枝上。在别的地方的冬天，雪下只有枯萎了的枝条”。经过一冬雪花的浓妆淡抹，大坪和周围的群峰，变成洁白的一片净土。赵循伯的《峨眉山》一书描述大坪冬景说：“冬季晴雪初霁，杉条掩盖，咸如瑶树琪花。仰视则九岭冈如屏风九叠，横遮天半；俯眺青莲、白云、宝掌、天池诸峰，玉琢银妆，弥望一白，备极幽峭精绝之胜。晴雪初霁，仁立在大坪以上高海拔的山峰上，鸟瞰大坪是另一番“幽峭精绝”的冬景。大坪和环绕四周的群峰，组合成一朵庞大的雪莲花：大坪如同花芯，丛丛参天古树活象花蕊，周围的峰峦宛似一裂裂花瓣。这朵洁白的雪莲花，正展瓣吐蕊，盛开在峨眉山的腹部，盛开在广阔无垠的天地之间；冬阳下，白中泛红，温润晶莹，冷艳妖娆。倘若在后山的霁雪亭，倚阑静观，举目回望，游者如同身处于雪莲花之，飘然有羽化成仙之感。”大坪霁雪“，凝聚着峨眉雪的形色美。宋代诗人白约在其《游峨杂咏》中叹曰：“岩静长留雪，山寒故放花。”
