体长780-1000毫米，体重10-15千克。体毛黄色 背脊呈棕黑色;眼角前内侧各有一条白纹，长约20毫米，其后有一棕黄色宽纹并向后延伸到枕部、其两侧有黑纹;耳背呈黑色喉和前胸有淡黑色横纹或花斑点;头部花纹较恒定。毛色有变异，包括全身红棕色及黑色者。
为热带、亚热带的森林动物。栖居高度可达海拔3000米左右。善爬缘树木，但多在地面活动。傍晚开始觅食，捕食啮齿类、野禽和小鹿等。产仔于树洞，每胎2仔。人工饲养可活18年。
我国2级保护动物，禁止猎杀和贸易。
