黑叶猴生活于热带、亚热带丛林中，树栖，喜群居，每群有一首领带领猴群活动。黑叶猴跳跃能力很强，一次可越出10多米。很少下地喝水，多饮露水和叶子上的积水，以嫩叶芽、花、果为食。通常2～3月份交配，8～9月份产仔，每年产1胎，每胎1 仔，偶见2仔。
黑叶猴是珍贵稀有灵长类动物之一，仅产于广西、贵州，分布区域狭窄，数量很少。
