In his article “Chinese Translatology and its Specific Characteristics”, Chang Nam-fung put forward the following arguments;(1)Chinese translatology is area-restricted translation studies;(2)The advocate of establishing “Chinese translation studies”is a product of national prejudice; and (3)The Chinese translatology only has applied translation theories but lacks pure translation theories.

However,the issue of equivalence in medical translation has been little studied.

This thesis makes a brief research on medical translation, with the purpose to provide theoretical and practical guidance for medical translation so as for the target text to be identical to truthful and scientific information of the ST, to be terse and comprehensible, clear and natural for the readership and to conform to norms of medical papers.

As an important branch of EST (English for Science and Technology) translation, medical translation boasts an important status in China with accomplished research results by specialists in this field.
