本篇是一首与劳动相结合的情歌。诗歌采用民间情歌常用的比兴、双关手法,以“莲”谐“怜”,象征爱情,以鱼儿戏水于莲叶问来暗喻青年男女在劳动中相互爱恋的欢乐情景。格调清新健康。诗歌的开头三句勾勒出一幅生动的江南景致。后四句以东、西、南、北并列,方位的变化以鱼儿的游动为依据,显得活泼、自然、有趣。句式复沓而略有变化,是《诗经》的传统手法,用在这里,更令人联想到采莲人在湖中泛舟来往、歌声相和相应的情景。诗中没有一字直接写人,但是通过对莲叶和鱼儿的描绘,却如闻其声,如见其人,如临其境,感受到一股勃勃生气,领略到采莲人内心的欢乐。
